cool, I learned my lesson with live 5.

I reckon logic must have an upgrade in the pipeline...7.2 was mostly a universal binary deal I think

but I bet you a magnum of champagne to a nickel live 10 will be out before logic 9

that sounds fair to me. i hate paying for stuff that should already work. can you imagine if you bought a car with a function that was supposed to work and when you really put it through its paces (which is hard with demo versions of software since they are often so crippled) you found out something didn't work? and then the dealer made you pay to fix it? that sort of thing would (almost) never fly in the "hard" industry -- in the "soft" industry, it seems to happen all the time. . .

ya.

well, I'm using a mac now - so I'm hoping standardised hardware equates to greater stability

a big part of the live deal is the 'on-the-fly' music making thing, a huge part of the marketing campaign.

with live 5, if you wanted your clips to stop and start on the bar it would clip the recording by a note or two. absolutely rotten, thats like buying a convertable and the top wont come down. ya the car drives, but the mutha-fuckin top dont come down dawg.

that wasnt fixed till 5.03, which took something like 8 months to drop :-o :-o :-o :-o :-o , and 5.03 had issues too - adding artifacts to rendered files, even rendering teensey weensey sets it would add clicks & pops mysteriously...

live 5 didnt work right for me till I got a universal binary iMac and the (of course extra cost) 5.2 UB upgrade.

I am still really peeved about that, cos thats how I use live - and I was using live 4 the whole time till I got the 5.2 upgrade ...not exactly why I gave them a wad of cash all that time ago, and within days of 5.2 coming out live 6 is announced :-o ......heh, ableton have a special naughty corner reserved just for them in the detention centre of business practice.

course, if you dont ever try to take the top down on your convertable, you may never know it doesnt work.

Emagic/Apple release Logic upgrades more slowly than Ableton but they cost a lot more too. The upgrade from Logic 6 to the newest version is $299. Thats almost three times what a Live upgrade costs. Sure, you get a lot of stuff with the Logic 6 - 7 upgrade. You also get a lot of stuff with three Live upgrades.

Seriously, I just don't see how Ableton are a bad company. Their support is good, they listen to users, and they are honest about what they can or can't achieve. Thats more than you can say for a lot of software companys. If you want to see a music software company that genuinely treats users like shit, just look at NI.

dude, thats *the* quintessential ableton-apologist retort (just look at NI).

'so what if you're getting a dick in the ass, the individual next door has a bigger dick in their ass'

I dont even wish I was that optimistic

i really don't see what all the ableton bashing is about. live has worked perfectly for me since version 4. never had any encounter with the unrepaired bugs you're all mentioning. can't wait till 6 comes out, will buy it right away!

and mentioning support, i've been mailing with robert henke himself when i had a misterious problem to solve.

but how is this turbomidi related?

I'm not being an apologist, I'm being realistic. Ableton are as good as your gonna get as far as music software companys go. Emagic/Apple, Steinberg, NI etc have all treated their customers far worse than Ableton have. Spend a few years with Logic or Cubase and see if you still feel the same about Ableton.

Seriously, what have Ableton done that would commonly be considered bad business practice? Charged for upgrades and add-ons? Not fixed bugs instantly? Not had the same definition of 'Complete Music Package' as some guy on an internet music forum?

Companys exist to support themselves first, serve you second. That is the way the world works. People don't work for free, and software development is a complicated messy business. To expect otherwise is unrealistic and naive.

Ableton has mad issues.... But does anyone have the inside info on what the Future X10 does besides transfer samples to the UW?
