i plan on using the max/msp apps that peeps made for the monome (and more will come, i'm sure). i hope to have fun with that and record the output, then work with that.

Yeah...I think I caught the bug as well. I will use Step and mlr for now and learn from there.

If I understand correctly... you don't need to own Max/MSP...you just need the Max/msp runtime (which is free) right?

Are you using it with a Mac?

Basically, you just need to buy the monome, use these free apps and you're set right?

yeah, the max/msp runtime is free and will allow you to run the mlr and step apps (as well as other patches which i'm sure will creep up). and yes, for now the monome is all you need. you can get up and running using mlr and step. but mapd will be out soon, which will map the monome buttons to midi notes/cc's so you can use it with live or logic or whatever. that should be out in a couple weeks. which, if you place an order now, you prolly won't get it for at least a couple weeks anyway. oh, and yes i'm on mac. i don't think any of their stuff fully works for pc's yet (including the max/msp patches, pc users are having problems with them currently).

Thanks buddy. I think I will try it... the worst that can happen is that I hate it... they run out of the first run...and I sell it to someone who wants one badly. Are they based in the US? How much was shipping and what shipping service did they use?

shipping should be cheap. it's light, i think. read the details on their site on manufacturing and philosophy, etc. the reason why it's expensive is that they're very enviro friendly in every facet of the design. they even bike to the ups drop off point! i think they're a great community and doing an awesome thing. they're gonna make their software open source. they're even gonna put the hardware details out there for people to see so they can modify theirs if they want to (they *encourage* you to modify it as well as their software). and yes, they're us-based.

i read on their site today that the 16x16 monome will begin development soon (but is several months away from production) and that they're shooting for it to be sub-$1000. which is nice, considering it's four times the number of parts as the 40h monome which costs $500. their comment was: "we're not in this just to make money. if we were, we'd be making cell phones or something."
