What's the big deal with this thing? Anyone have any experience with this? I'm very interested.

unfortunately the company has gone belly up. The released a 'vst' version which came with a mandatory controller/dongle. It used the exact same code as the hardware version, but it was a CPU MONSTER. it cost close to a grand. A company called www.musicstore.com, based in germany, sold the vst version for 149 euro! I'm not sure about the intricate details of how they came to own these, allegedly genuine, units for such a low price - but hartman were suing them at the time and refusing to offer support to anyone who purchased on, not only that they added a function to the vst version that was not included initially - the ability to import your own samples & sounds. I really wanted one at the time, but I also wanted to bring in my own samples and I wasnt as certain that it was a legit deal as I am now....

But apparently - going by what people have said, its far out. Funnilly enough I've never come across any audio examples on line, if you find any please post here...


I think it could quite easily become a highly priced boutique item, now that the company has gone bust. Still...for the money involved, I think I'd get a kyma system www.symbolicsound.com and a lemur www.jazzmutant.com. You might not knock out amazing stuff in real time (it also costs a fortune to get a fully spec'd kyma) , but if live use isnt an issue a basic kyma setup can render anything a fully spec'd one can, with the change going towards a lemur.

heh, lots of money involved indeed. the neuron costs close to 5 g's if I remember correct.


sadly, I doubt people will be rushing to sell their neurons, if even a smidgen of the hype is true....

the neuron used to be very expensive indeed, but now the very same store in germany that offered the cheap neuron vst, has the hardware neuron on offer for a reduced price of 1777 euros :-?
(btw, there was another german store that offered the vst for the same price, and didn't get 'in trouble' for doing that if i recall it correctly.)

i've read quite some reports with complaints about the machine crashing often, not doing what it is supposed to do, being slow and counterintuitive and not that special soundwise. but that is not first hand information - just what i found on the net... (check soundonsound, bluesynths.com,...)

i'd rather buy a mm for that money - but that's comparing apples to pears i guess.

Maybe a basic Kyma system is limited if you work with the timeline to run everything in realtime. Nevertheless, if you got a Kyma system with 2 extra DSP cards, it will give you a lot of freedom in processing power.

woah. that's a considerable price drop.....i heard the neuron was great for percussive sounds.

thanks for the heads up, I'll have to look into this (even tho my experience with musicstore usually sucks [big delays]) I'll check out soundonsound too...

i always got the stuff i ordered within 1-2 days, maybe i was lucky
oh, now i remember one occasion - my rme fireface was late, went there to get it, they just sold the last one and had to reorder it, but it was only out for two weeks at the time. they made me a 'new price' though, which is always nice.

make sure to check the reviews (3 parts) on bluesynth - the soundonsound review goes back to the previous operating system, which apparently had a lot of flaws. according to the guy on bluesynths, it is still far from perfect. would be great if you could test it first and check if he's right. on the other hand these guys at sonicstate seem to think it's a great synth (and there's links to audio demos), and over at harmony central the two reviewers seem pretty positive about it too...

btw b0unce, could it be that i've seen you on synthforum.nl as well?

No we havent met before, but I lived in amsterdam for close to a year, worked in the grasshopper close to the dam rak/red light district.

after listening to some demos of the neuron I'm not really that impressed, as was stated - its effects heavy. Delays and reverbs glossing over only mediocre sounds - or sounds that dont seem 'fantastic' at least. Shame about all that hype - I was expecting something of kyma proportions - if you had a stiffy for the neuron I'd recommend putting the dough towards a kyma and saving a little longer....

even now that the neuron hardware synth can be bought for 1,777 euro - I dont think I'd drop that much on it now. I hope I'm wrong and I just heard some shit demos - I would love to believe the hype & hear some unique stuff done with the model maker .... buts its not enough to compete with the kyma & the community who are involved with kyma offering support & help, with a stable company keeping the product up to date....why not so long ago they released the TAO ....anyone here using a kyma & tao ? ...how many dsp's would you need to run it live ?
