Anyone ever have a Sixtrak, MS20, or Prophet 5? 18 Years, 2 Months ago
Ive been looking for other keyboards, clavia etc. And I spent some time last night and finally found a site with some good sound examples. The three synths that really caught me were the Sequential Prophet 5, and Korg ms20. I really loved the sound. I have the pro-52 plugin that was put out by Native Instruments. It doesnt sound good to me. I also have the Korg Legacy collection with the ms20 in it, it also doesnt not sound good.

Now the prophet 5, and the ms20 for that matter are expensive and midiless. So I was thinking about getting the Sequential Ciruits Six trak. It has midi, I guess im just wondering if I would find sounds "comparable" in feel to the prophet 5. I know it wont be close, as theyr two different beast. But similar would be fine for me. As far as the MS20 goes, im not sure if the sound is the oscillators or the filter. If its the filter, I can just get the Frostwave resonator.

Anyone familiar with these synths enough to help?

edit: nevermind I found some information out. Sorry
Couldnt figure out how to delete this post.

If you can find them at a good price and condition, get them.

I didn't have the SixTrak, but I had the SCI Max, which is exactly the same thing, only without the control interface (you cahnge the parameters via CC's). The sound on the SixTrak (and Multi-trak, Split-8--they all use the same analog chips) is rich. Certainly richer than your Pro-52, but not the P5.

The MS-20 is my dream-synth. It's iconic, to say the least. The growling filter, the "living" oscs, the patch area...what more do you want in a 2 VCO monosynth?

Maybe a year or two ago, you could still pick one up for about $700-800, but the vintage market is still booming. If you have a spare $1G, it might be worth it.

You'll pay triple that for a P5 rev 3.

Im mostly interested in the Sixtrak. The price is nice, I love the size of it, midi is a plus as well.

Im just hoping that it can get "some" of the warm sounds ive heard the prophet get.

could you post the link to the site where you found the sound examples?

I love my MS20

The thing is amazing, even though I "know" what all the pots and patches do, it seems to offer infinite new possibilities. The audio to CV function on the patchbay is always capable of heavy novelty and although the MS20 doesn't have the same fat lead types you might get from a prophet, it just does its own cool MS20 thing which I treat like a barking dog!

the sixtrak is a great synth- it is a great mix of rich analog tones and 'video game' sounds. be sure to get the most recent os, as the previous ones don't support multitimbrality over midi (IE crappy internal sequencer only)

the MS-20 is a lot of fun, but that is probably the noisiest synth i've ever tried- the VCA was terrible. filter sounded great, oscillators were really nice. the patching, while interesting only made me want a full modular (every time i wanted to patch something, i found it didn't have a jack for it). the pitch to CV is AMAZING though. awesome for really weird stuff.

never tried a P5

if i were you, i'd get the six trak and a frostwave resonator. best of both worlds.

That seems like a real good idea dirge. A sixtrak, the frostwave resonator, and a nice analog delay pedal for it.

ggoodwin: Heres those sites.
Bluesynths mostly older analogs and what not.

Aliens-Project
this guy has an area where he tweaks with synths. The samples are ok, theres a few hard to find synths on there, as far as demos go. Such as the sixtrak. Honestly, I dont like most of the samples. Not alot of usable stuff, more fx sounds really.

Bluesynths is one of the best vintage synth review sites out there.

Incidentally, all true synth-heads should check out this blog:

i have owned or used all these synths and the frostwave.. i would recommend them all except the prophet 5.. its too big. sixtrak has a very familiar sequential sound which i love. its fun layering the patches, midi is rudimentary and sometimes you can overload the synth with msgs causing it to lock up. ms20 is more of a scientist's machine slightly less musical sounding but has some serious scope when it comes to vibrating an object. frostwave is rad but it really comes to life when you feed it a control voltage or four. depending what other gear you have i would suggest getting the ms20. its got more knobs.

[EDIT: GET ALL THREE!]
