How is the Blofeld SL experience? 10 Months, 2 Weeks ago
Anyone here got the SL update for Blofeld?

I have a Blofeld and would love to hear from someone who has the bought the SL product.
Is it worth the money? Intuitive?

Cheers

Took me a good four months to get the license to start with. Then it took me about 20 mins to upload the factory sample bank. You can't add and remove samples from the Blo. You upload the entire bank and wipe whatever is on. As long as you upload short samples or don't mind waiting that shouldn't be much of a problem.

Sound wise it's actually quite good. You have to add a few ms of silence to short samples to avoid clicking end noise though. Haven't had much time exploring it to the full extent yet.

Just ordered the upgrade.

I'll post some impressions as soon as I get my head around it. Could take some time

how is everyone doing with the sample licence?

looking at a cheap blofeld at the moment- if anyone would like to give me a run down that would be great. II' pondering: does it sound a little like the mono? What are the sampling capabilities? and control wise is it intuitive?

It doesn't sample and that would be cool but if it sampled it would cost a lot more than it does. The person above was probably loading the factory samples through midi because that does take a while(like 18 minutes). If you are loading samples over USB with Spectre it is fast but then again I didn't load the max amount. It is cool to be able to use multisamples, drum kits or random samples as oscillators. Certainly gives you more sound design options but I am still wanting a V-synth XT when it comes to Synthesis and samples.

The parameter matrix is laid out fine. The main 4 parameters are page one in each section but you do use the main encoder to go into the further pages. Instead of just going up and down like the mono you click a button to whatever section and then turn the main knob for the further pages. If you like a lot of knobs you probably wont like but you could always use a midi knob box if you have one. It has flexible routings, modifiers, different filter types, more voices and envelopes than the mono. They do not sound the same to me which is why I wanted to try it out. The Blofeld can get pretty dirty and nasty. I dig it but haven't had it long enough to really say if it is a total keeper.

The only thing that is kind of meh right now in my usage is they delay causes the output to go silent when you are editing parameters and sound resumes when you stop editing. The output is kind of low and midi over usb went wack during one jam session. I am pretty sure this stuff is being worked on for the upcoming OS update.

If the Mono is your only digital synth then the Blofeld might be a nice complimentary synth especially at how inexpensive they are. Maybe check out Stefan Trippler's demos or Jexus' demo vids. I didn't really like Trippler's demos music wise but I heard some cool sounds and Jexus always makes fun vids.

The Blofeld sounds great - I especially like the comb filters, ring modulation and distortion.

Just got the SL licence.

That was a bloody nightmare.

Why? because I've got mac OSX Snow Leopard. All software related to challenge codes and sample transfer has to be done with OS Leopard or lower.
The only workaround is totally retarded - you have to buy a usb 1.1 hub and put that between the blofeld and your snow leopard equipped mac. THEN it should work.
I've had to order this: http://supershoppen.net/shop/usb-1-1-457p.html

All this info I've gotten from emails from Waldorf. But their customer service sucks donkey balls. Very late replies and no info on their site about the problems that any blofeld/snow leopard user will encounter.

My current status is that I've installed the SL license and the factory SL samples from a friends computer. She's got Leopard.

Can't help being a little bitter towards Waldorfs support and lack of working software solutions. It is not fair selling a product that's so hard to get up and running!

Solution: Buy a PC.

I kidding I kidding. That does sound suck but Leopard was the OS that was out when v1.13 for the Blo was out March of last year. Hopefully the OS that is supposedly being beta tested will iron out the bugs.

i really like checking out jexus' vids. he's the one that finally sold me on a nord lead. well, his patches did anyway. i would consider a blo again in the future, but probably only the key version. a bug fixed, knob laden blo keyboard would rock. or a stromberg....
